Zurich 1960. In her heartache, 16-year-old Nina Dorizzi secretly wished for an illness. She wanted to be sick for a week or two so everyone had to take care of her. A little later she got really sick. What initially looked like the flu turned out to be severe polio with life-long dependence on a breathing apparatus. In 1980 Nina organized the first handicapped demonstration in Switzerland in Bern. Not alms but fair financial support was her demand and as a committed politician she worked for disabled people and marginalized groups all her life. Until shortly before her death, she pursued the goal of giving disabled people around the world strength for a self-determined life. “Just dreaming doesn't get you anywhere. Every now and then you have to do something. ”(Nina Dorizzi) In November 2008, Nina Dorizzi died at the age of 64 in Winterthur. With her we lose a woman who was not only an important role model for disabled people, but also gave strength to many non-disabled people and showed through her efforts how to overcome hopeless situations with a strong will.
