Charlotte (Sandra Hüller) is a German doctor in Brussels. She is married to an architect and has a young son. Charlotte rents an apartment to meet and have sex with less attractive men who are among her patients. At the same time, she leads a loving marriage and family life. Her sex life with her husband Max (Dragan Bakema) is characterized by security and trust. She reads the fairy tale “The Girl Without Hands” by the Brothers Grimm to her son as a bedtime story. When she meets one of her chosen patients again and he wants to get closer to her, Charlotte has a nervous breakdown. She lashes out at the man and finally passes out. Charlotte's affairs are now known. She loses her job as a doctor and her marriage is on the rocks. Together with her husband, she tries to save the marriage with therapy. However, she skillfully avoids questions when searching for reasons for her behavior. Two years later, the family has moved to India, where Max works as an architect. Twins have been born, and family happiness seems to have been regained. But Max still cannot get rid of his doubts about his wife. The mistrust remains, and he follows her on her morning walks.
